The German Shepherd Dog Club of America has been dedicated to the GSD breed in the United States of America since 1913. It works in conjunction with the American German Shepherd Dog Charitable Foundation to support genetic and lifestyle research for the benefit of the German Shepherd Dog.

2   Link   American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation
The mission of the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, Inc. (CHF) is to advance the health of all dogs and their owners by funding sound scientific research and supporting the dissemination of health information to prevent, treat, and cure canine disease. The Foundation has established a series of goals as well as a strategy for achieving these goals.

With more than 60 years of history, our reputation and scientific expertise are second to none. Since our inception, the Foundation has funded more than 1,700 humane animal health studies. At any given time, Morris Animal Foundation is managing about 300 animal health and welfare research studies at the world’s most respected research institutions, colleges of veterinary medicine and zoos. Each year, we also fund about 70 veterinary student scholar projects.

More than 500 hereditary disorders have been described that affect dogs, necessitating an increased understanding of the canine genome to improve the health of dogs. Now that we have mapped the complete dog genome, genes involved in both disease and desired traits can be identified much more quickly. This article provides a brief introduction to the canine genome and how scientists use it to study canine hereditary diseases.
